How to Generate a Drum Cleaning Page
Overview
If you notice spots, marks, or shading on your prints, run a Drum Cleaning Page. This guide shows you how to generate one on all OKI printers supported by Mediaset.
A Drum Cleaning Page removes toner residue and small particles from the image drum surface. It is a quick maintenance step that resolves most minor print quality problems without replacing any parts.
When to Use Drum Cleaning
Run a Drum Cleaning Page when you see any of the following:
- Small black or white dots on prints
- Light shading or smudges in the background
- Repeating marks at regular intervals down the page
- Black marks on the back of the printed sheet (toner buildup on fuser — cleaning page helps clear residual toner in the drum area)
How often: Run it when print quality drops, or after replacing any consumable (drum, toner, belt). If the problem persists after two cleaning cycles, the issue is a worn component that needs replacing.
Instructions by Model

OKI C650 / C844 (Button-Based Panel)
- Make sure the printer is powered on and not printing.
- Press the Menu button on the operator panel.
- Navigate to Maintenance using the arrow buttons.
- Select Drum Cleaning.
- Press OK to confirm.
- The printer will feed a blank sheet of paper and run the cleaning cycle automatically.
- Wait for the printer to return to the ready state.
Note: Make sure there is paper loaded in the tray before starting. The cleaning process uses one sheet of A4 paper.

OKI MC853 / MC873 / MC883 (Touchscreen Panel)
- On the home screen, tap Device Settings (gear icon).
- Tap Maintenance.
- Tap Drum Cleaning.
- Tap Execute to begin the cleaning cycle.
- The printer feeds a sheet and runs the cleaning process.
- Wait for the screen to return to the home menu.
Alternative path: Press Home/Help > Troubleshoot > Device Maintenance and Care > Drum Cleaning.
Note: On some firmware versions, the menu path may differ slightly. If "Drum Cleaning" is not visible under Maintenance, check under Admin Setup > Maintenance.
OKI ES8453 / ES8473 / ES8483 (Touchscreen Panel)
The ES-series shares the same platform as the MC853/MC873/MC883. Follow the same steps:
- Tap Device Settings (gear icon) on the home screen.
- Tap Maintenance > Drum Cleaning.
- Tap Execute.
-
Wait for the process to complete.
OKI Pro9431
- On the operator panel, navigate to Menus > Maintenance.
- Select Drum Cleaning.
- Press OK or Execute to start.
- The printer runs the cleaning cycle using one sheet from the active tray.
Note: The Pro9431 uses a different drum configuration (5 drums for CMYK + white). If print quality issues persist after cleaning, check each individual drum for damage.
What to Do If Cleaning Does Not Fix the Problem
If you have run the Drum Cleaning Page twice and still see the same marks:
-
Check the image drum. Open the front cover and carefully remove the drum unit. Look at the green surface of the drum — if you see scratches, marks, or buildup that does not wipe off with a soft dry tissue, the drum needs replacing.
See: Replacing the Image Drum.
-
Clean the LED head. Wipe the LED head gently with a soft, dry lint-free cloth. Dust or toner on the LED head can cause vertical white lines or faded areas.
See: Cleaning the LED Heads.
-
Check the transfer belt. If marks appear across all colours, the transfer belt may have toner buildup or surface damage.
-
Check the fuser unit. If marks appear on the back of the page, or at intervals of approximately 85 mm, the fuser may need replacing.
See: Replacing the Fuser Unit.
